The Company of Women is part of a series of works that reimagines episodes from Eca de Quieros's nineteenth-century nove The Crime of Father Amaro through a contrary multilayered perspective. Well known in Portugal, the book tells of a love affair between a priest, Father Amaro, and a young woman. This painting recounts a childhood memory of Amaro, aged nine, being pampered by the family maids. But Amaro is no child in Rego's version, which has an unsettling quality through her use of an adult model in a radically foreshortened pose.
