This new book recounts in detail the formative period of modern architecture in Northern Ireland, from its founding in 1921 until the end of the 1940s. It is profusely illustrated using rare archival photographs, original architectural drawings, and contemporary sources in the architectural press from Ireland and beyond, revealing a rich seam of buildings of unsuspected quality and depth. Among these, the schools of Reginald Wilshere, the cinemas of John McBride Neill, and the houses by Philip Bell stand out, while a host of other notable buildings and projects are also recounted, many published for the first time since they were built or proposed.
With its comprehensive approach, accessible text and fascinating array of illustrations, Ulster Modern makes an original and important contribution to the history of architecture, not only in covering a neglected period in Northern Ireland, but in filling a gap in the story of the spread of the Modern Movement worldwide. Ulster Modern is intended as a companion volume to Paul Larmour’s Free State Architecture: Modern Movement Architecture in Ireland, 1922-1949 – also published by Gandon Editions – thus completing the story of early Modern Movement architecture on the island of Ireland.
