Created in conjunction with Championing Irish Art Exhibition: The Mary and Allen Hobart Collection, an exhibition dedicated to the Pyms Gallery.
The portrait depicts Grace Clifford Plunkett, who was a student under Orpen at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art between 1904 and 1907. Irish and global events took both student and teacher on separate paths. Orpen became a prolific war artist and would capture the horrors of the Somme during 1916/1917. Grace became a political caricature artist, and was involved with Joseph Plunkett and the rising during Easter 1916. Grace famously married Plunkett in Kilmainham Gaol, just hours before his execution.
